Airgedlámh: An Irish Fantasy Fiction Magazine (Autumn, 1980)
Edited by Dave McFerran
Publishers: Stephen Jones & David A. Sutton
(a) Airgedlámh Publications, UK • mag • £1.50/$4.00 (Limited to 500 numbered copies)
Dave McFerran should be here to see this, for it is his concept and his ideals that shaped
Airgedlámh. Dave, or "Cuddles" as he was so fondly known to his many friends, died on
February 5th, 1980, a few days short of his twenty-sixth birthday. He was a popular and
tirelessly irrepressible figure in British Fantasy fandom, with an inexhaustible wit
and an unending supply of anecdotes, as acquaintances at Fantasy conventions will
readily attest. His articles and reviews appeared in many magazines, he worked with
Jim FitzPatrick on a number of projects and was closely involved with The British
Fantasy Society for several years. As British correspondent to the American magazine
Chacal, he contributed the entertaining 'Crosswinds' column to its pages. Sadly,
however, the two publications he hoped to edit himself, Vadhagh and Airgedlámh,
never appeared. Dave had been seriously ill with cancer since July 1979 (and was in
pain for most of the World Science Fiction Convention in Brighton), but after an
operation at Christmas he appeared to be recovering slowly. In fact, he communicated
his hopes to travel from his home in Belfast to England to see some of his
friends shortly before his death... As close associates and friends to the
posthumous editor of Airgedlámh, we know that Dave will be missed by a great
many fans and we offer this single issue of the magazine as a special tribute to him.

"Portrait Galley" by Stephen Jones
[Note: This was a one-off "special" from the publisher of Legend Horror Classics.
It was a bit of a rush job, as the editor wanted to get this "authorised" poster
magazine out as quickly as possible to help with his cash-flow. In April 1975 I
spent the day with actors Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen, who were rehearsing
for the latest series of Doctor Who (the sets were marked out with white tape
on the floor). Although I had a lovely time hanging out with the cast and crew,
I ended up using some reference stills to produce this portrait of Tom Baker
in just three days!

"Portrait Galley" by Stephen Jones
[Note: Editor "Gent Shaw" (Jim Shier) left World of Horror magazine after issue No.7 (it
only lasted two more issues) to pursue independent projects in the publishing world and took me
with him. In May 1975 he launched this fold-out newsstand magazine that included a comic strip
by art editor Kevin O'Neill (who had previously appeared in World of Horror and would
go on to fame as the co-creator of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Alan
Moore). I was commissioned to do a "Portrait Gallery" of famous horror film stars for the back
cover, but it soon became apparent that because of the detailing I couldn't meet the monthly
deadline. So we decided that I would share the spot with my old friend Jim Pitts (who was
also a veteran of World of Horror). The magazine ran for twelve issues (although
the final three issues were produced in a different format, without the portraits,
from another publisher).

[Note: I also supplied the photos for my article on Hellraiser.
By now history had repeated itself and Forrest J Ackerman was long-gone as an
editorial influence—James Van Hise had officially taken over editing
the magazine with #9 and Forry's name had disappeared off the cover with the
following issue. I had continued working with Van Hise, who was a decent guy,
but he couldn't halt the decline in the quality and eventually the publishers
stopped paying what they owed. After repeated efforts to get my money, one
evening Dennis Etchison drove me out to Hal and Jack Schuster's home
in Canoga Park, California, where I confronted the brothers, who wouldn't
let us into the house. After we refused to move off their doorstep, they
eventually passed a cheque through the door. Surprisingly, it didn't bounce,
but my involvement with the magazine was well and truly over. It didn't
really matter, because this was the final issue anyway.

World Of Horror (No. 4) [January 1975]
Editor: Gent Shaw [Jim Shier]
(a) Dallruth Publishing Group, UK • mag • .30p
| Illustration (page 14) |
[Uncredited] |
|
[Note: This was my first "professional" publication. The editor of this
monthly newsstand magazine contacted me and asked if he could reprint a spot
illustration I had done for the B.F.S. Bulletin.
They used it to illustrate a story entitled 'The Clown That Cried Blood' by
Georgianna Lee [associate editor Lee Kennedy], but it was reproduced too small
and too dark. However, it did lead to other things.
